Weddings at St George's Hotel
Couple who first tied the knot 65 years ago share their secret to a long and happy marriage.
If you're looking for the secret to a long and happy marriage, look no further than the Bassett’s. In fact, Bob and Alma are so good at it that they married each other twice.
In a ceremony at St George’s Hotel in Llandudno on Saturday, the couple from Deganwy renewed their vows and said “I do” almost 65 years to the day of their first nuptials in 1953.
Long marriages obviously run in the family with their two sons both recently celebrating their 45th and 35th year anniversaries.
Bob and Alma - who are now in their 80s made the occasion a family affair bringing their two children, six grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren together for the first time in 12 years to mark their sapphire milestone.
Alma was 17 and Bob was 21 when they first got hitched.
Alma, now 83, admitted she was nervous about her second big day.
“I just want the whole family to have a lovely day as it’s the first time in 12 years since we’ve all been together,” she said.
The grandmother added: “We always said we’d like to renew our vows but we wanted to wait for a milestone anniversary.
“We received a beautiful card from the Queen sent by special delivery.
“We’re going on a cruise later this month because we never had a honeymoon.”
Revealing the secret to a successful marriage, Alma said: “Our parents always told us you have to work hard at a marriage and we passed on that advice to our two sons.
“Everybody has arguments but you have to learn to give and take.
“We never leave the house without kissing each other goodbye and we always kiss each other hello.”
